Friday 13th, What do you think about it?

As i entered the office today and greeted in general "Good Morning", my voice came out like bad throat. To that my colleague commented that you know it's 13th August today so in general there will be more accidents. Ok to be honest i don't know what 13th August has to do with more accidents.

My other colleague added it has to do with Bible as it is noted there. Okay now i don't know that too. So that first colleague said ya see it has to do something with Bible but as i don't follow it, i shouldn't believe in it. True, isn't it?

So is this just a Dutch belief or in other counties too regarding accidents?
I couldn't find any logic in 13th August, so i google and came across this link, there is also a separate paragraph on this Dutch belief.
To sum it up as 13 number is believed inauspicious (which i knew) and also Friday ( which i didn't know) so this combination of 13th and Friday must be !

Don't know where all these superstition started year back. To me accidents happens everyday, it's just as our minds are more receptive of any bad news on this particular day because it is actually looking for it to validate that belief and so it notes those incidents more than on any other day.

What do you think? Do you have any 13 and Friday stories? and what about Bible, where does Bible play role in this? Because of Good Friday or Black Friday thing? ( Pls forgive me for my ignorance ! )

Friday the 13th is unlucky because it's the day when an undead seal killer rises from the bottom of Camp Crystal Lake and... no... wait... Sorry, that's the plot of the movie.

Friday the 13th is believed to be unlucky in England as well but I don't really buy it.

I don't knw what is the truth behind this Friday the 13th thing. But today sure is a bad day with 2 very bad news coming to me as first thing in the morning. After those..I am kind of getting superstitious too.
I hope rest of the day goes well for everyone!

:/ I actually was falling for your most intelligent reply, glad i am not one of those who doesn't finish till end before replying :o/
hehehe

I think 13 is in general believed as an unlucky number, i have even seen that as noone wants to buy that number 13 at some places they skip that number, they number it 14 directly after 12.

Surely hoping rest of the day goes well for you and everyone.

I got proposed for the first time in my life on 13th. Don't remember if it was Friday. It didn't work, though! :P

There are some horror movies named Friday the 13th. Story of a serial killer.

I read something on The Da Vinci Code about this, as far as I remember. Probably the Knights Templers were killed on Friday the 13th, who were said to be the protectors of the secret of Jesus Christ and his bloodline.

Well, I'm not aware of any other reason for Friday the 13th, but Dan Brown draws a very thin line between fiction and fact, so the Da Vinci Code explanation may be true.

Mostly no. 13 and Friday believed to be unlucky in western-christian world sply. in west Europe followed by US too. As what i know, its related to Jesus Christ and his last supper before his crucification. One interesting matter I've found in North America is, mostly two story house has 13 steps on staircase.
This link may help to find answers abt. this question.

Hi Lopa!

I hope your Friday the 13th went well in spite of the superstitious gimics of the day. I personally do not believe in any of such things in regards to a particular date, that's me though. Hence I can't offer any historical background on the origin of the beliefs associated with this date. However, I can tell you today that I did not pass my interview (well the pre-interview, you can read about it on my blog), went to see a well anticipated film which came out today, and visited a museum on my way home. Tonight I might go to a birthday party as well. So, thus far I'm not in dis pair due to some minor unlucky events :)

Cheers!

My birthday is on 13th Feb! I like it even if it's a Friday, and frankly enough I never cared for such things! It's a silly belief, I don't buy that! Just coz of this belief, we notice more bad things on Friday, the 13ths! A day can be good or bad, be it whatever day or date! :)

It's the movie of the same name that caused a lot of these superstitions, I guess..:)

BTW, did you know the term for fear of this day? It's friggatriskaidekaphobia.

Some buildings in my country don't have a 13th floor. They just skip 13 and call it the 14th floor or something else.

Is it being supertitious? I don't know. Some people think that they are simply being cautious.

The origin? We have to research on it. lol

Interesting! We have this superstition in America too, and we also have a superstition that walking under ladders, walking where a black cat has crossed your path and breaking a mirror brings bad luck. I have no stories to share about it because I never believed these superstitions, but I did learn a lot about it here from you today! I never had really thought about if it was worldwide or not, so thank you for sharing :-)

@ Mind Writer!
Wow, you remember date when you were proposed for the first time? I don't :o(

Yeah, recently there was a Bollywood movie too named 13B or something featuring Madhavan. And yes it's mentioned in Da Vinci Code as well, so i guess it's all together, beliefs, exaggerations and superstitions, co-incidents ! A product out of complete khichdi.

@ Minal
Aaaah that's nice to know Minal. Thanks for the link, it tells story of almost all numbers.
But shouldn't they be avoiding 13 steps if that number is considered unlucky?

@ Sourav

I never cared about it either, never even gave it a thought but when first thing in morning you hear is a discussion over it, i thought to take a look on it what others think about it ! It turns out there are more like me than those believing in that :o)

@ AmitL

Yeah i read that on that wikipedia link about 13th friday....hehe, i won't be able to remember or pronounce it correctly every though !

@ Droomvla

hey after a long time here !
Yes i have seen those things, skipping 13th floor or skipping 13 number in a row and giving 14 number directly after 12, but for builders it is more of a sale reason as they say it is difficult to sell those buildings number 13.
Apparently, even if people don't believe in superstition they won't like to take a chance with such investment !

@ A Touch of Dutch

That superstition about walking under the ladder, i came to know very recently when we visited York, UK. But i think i might would have heard grand parents advised something like that but i never paid attention so it was new for me.
Walking where a black cat has crossed your path is a very well known superstition even in India. Also breaking of mirror !

Ohhh well, for me, Friday 13th came and went, unnoticed, fortunately!
I am not at all supersticious but it's just fun to read about all these things and their origin.
In Argentina we have a saying: "Tuesday 13th, do not get married and do not get on board" - I'll have to do research now to find out where it comes from!! Thanks Lopa! hehe But the curious thing is, in our case the superstition involves a Tuesday 13th, not a Friday! Go figure!!

My Unfinished Life said...

well, i dont believe in it, its all what our individual minds perceive..if something happens in a bad way and we chose to see it coz of certain thing/incident/date..its our minds doing the trick!!!
